Every case

What each case does

Each one follows a clear rule, applied the same way every time. Web and email addresses stay as typed in Sentence case, Title Case and Capitalize Each Word, so links don’t break.

UPPERCASE and lowercase

Every letter becomes a capital or a small letter, in any alphabet. German ß becomes SS in capitals.

Hello World → HELLO WORLD → hello world

Sentence case

A capital at the start of each sentence and each line, the rest lowercase. I stays capitalized; e.g. and Dr. don’t end a sentence.

THE NEW iPhone IS OUT. i LOVE IT → The new iPhone is out. I love it

Title Case

Major words get a capital; small words like “of” and “the” stay lowercase. Choose AP, Chicago or APA style.

the lord of the rings → The Lord of the Rings

Capitalize Each Word

Every word starts with a capital, small words too. Handy for names, headings and lists.

don’t stop me now → Don’t Stop Me Now

camelCase, snake_case and more

Join words for code: camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case, CONSTANT_CASE or dot.case. Each line on its own.

Hello world-foo_bar → helloWorldFooBar hello_world_foo_bar

aLtErNaTiNg and InVeRsE

Alternating switches every other letter; Inverse turns capitals into small letters and small letters into capitals.

sarcasm → sArCaSm · Hello → hELLO

Title case rules

The three title styles, in plain words

Every style capitalizes the first word and the first word after a colon or dash, and keeps acronyms such as NASA as typed when Keep acronyms is on. They differ in which small words stay lowercase. These rules are close to each guide, not a complete copy of it.

AP style

Lowercase: a, an, the; and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so; as, at, by, in, of, on, per, to, via. The last word is always capitalized, and so is each part of a hyphenated word that isn’t one of those small words.

A Guide to Self-Driving Cars

Chicago style

Lowercase: articles; and, but, for, or, nor; and prepositions of any length, such as between, through and without. The last word is capitalized. After a prefix like anti- or pre-, the next part stays lowercase.

Anti-inflammatory Food without the Fuss

APA style

Lowercase: articles, short conjunctions (and, as, but, for, if, nor, or, so, yet) and short prepositions (at, by, in, of, on, per, to, via). Words of four letters or more are capitalized. APA has no last-word rule.

What It Is Made of

What no tool can know: whether up, out, off or down is part of a verb (Sign Up) or a preposition, so they are always capitalized; and whether a word like Paris is a name, so Sentence case makes it lowercase. Check those two by hand. With Keep acronyms on, a single word in capitals such as NASA is kept, while a run of them (PLEASE READ THIS) is read as shouting and converted.

FAQ

Questions about changing case

How do I convert uppercase to lowercase?

Paste your text in the box and press lowercase. The converted text shows up next to it straight away, and your original stays as it is, so you can try another case without pasting again. Press Copy result or Download .txt to take it with you.

Which title case rules does this follow?

Pick AP, Chicago or APA style. All three capitalize the first word, the first word after a colon or dash, and every major word, and keep articles, short conjunctions and short prepositions lowercase. AP and Chicago also capitalize the last word, and Chicago keeps longer prepositions like between and without lowercase too. The rules are close to each guide, not a full copy of it: a tool can’t tell when up, out, off or down belong to a verb, so they are always capitalized. Check those by hand.

What is sentence case?

Sentence case capitalizes only the first word of each sentence and of each new line, like normal writing. A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, but not after abbreviations such as e.g. or Dr. The word I stays capitalized, and with Keep acronyms on, words like NASA and iPhone stay as typed. Names such as Paris or Maria become lowercase, because a tool can’t know they are names, so fix those by hand.

How do I capitalize the first letter of each word?

Press Capitalize Each Word. Every word starts with a capital and the rest is lowercase, also after a hyphen, so self-driving becomes Self-Driving and don’t becomes Don’t. Use Title Case instead if small words like of, and and the should stay lowercase.

What are camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case?

Ways programmers join words without spaces. camelCase and PascalCase capitalize each word (userProfileImage, UserProfileImage), snake_case and CONSTANT_CASE join words with underscores, kebab-case with hyphens and dot.case with dots. Words are split on spaces, punctuation and existing capitals, so Hello world-foo_bar and helloWorldFooBar both work as input. Each line is converted on its own.

Does it work with Turkish, German and other languages?

Yes. Accented letters and other alphabets change case correctly, and German ß becomes SS in capitals. Choose Turkish or Azerbaijani under Language to get İ and ı right, Greek to drop accents from capitals, or Dutch to capitalize IJ as one letter. The title case rules for small words are English only.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs in your browser, and your text is never sent to Trezio or anyone else. Your last input and your settings are kept in this browser’s local storage so a refresh doesn’t lose them; press Clear to remove the text.

How is this different from Trezio?

This tool changes the case of a text and forgets it. Trezio is where text worth keeping lives: notes, links, screenshots and voice notes in one library, with folders, tags and search, on the web, in the Chrome extension and in the Android app. There’s a free plan.
