Evernote alternatives: ten apps, sorted by how you used Evernote

Evernote's free plan now holds 50 notes. Where you should go next depends on what was in there: years of notebooks you write in, or a pile of clipped pages, links and quick notes. Here are ten options, what each costs, and whether it can read your Evernote export.

Updated 12 October 2026

We make Trezio, one of the options below. It is not a full notes app and cannot import your Evernote notes, so if you write long notes in notebooks another app on this list will suit you better, and we say which. Prices, limits and import details come from each app's own website, checked on 12 October 2026.

Why people look

What Evernote costs now

Evernote's own pricing page lists four plans. Free allows 50 notes, 1 notebook and 1 device, with 1 GB of uploads a month. Starter costs $14.99 a month or $99 a year for up to 1,000 notes, 20 notebooks and 3 devices. Advanced costs $24.99 a month or $249.99 a year and removes the limits. Enterprise is priced on request. Those are the US list prices in the page's data; Evernote sometimes shows offers, and prices vary by country.

If you already have more than your plan allows, Evernote says you can still view, edit, share and export what you have, but you cannot create new notes or notebooks until you are back under the limit. Notes in the trash count toward it. So nothing is locked away, and there is no rush: you can export at your own pace.

Your file

What's in an Evernote export

Exporting only works in the Evernote desktop app for Mac or Windows; Evernote Web cannot do it. It works on the Free plan. Select a notebook, or up to 100 notes at a time, right-click and choose Export. You can save an ENEX file (.enex, Evernote's own XML format) or HTML, and choose which details to include, such as tags, created date and author.

ENEX is the one to keep: it is what other note apps import. Joplin's docs say it carries your notes, tags, attached files and dates. Obsidian's docs warn that it does not record your notebook stacks or nested tags, so export each notebook to its own file, named after the notebook, and the structure mostly survives. Keep the files somewhere safe even after you move.

Notebooks and long notes

You write in Evernote and keep years of notes

You want a real notes app that imports everything. Try Joplin (free, open source, the closest to Evernote's notebooks) or Obsidian (free, your notes become Markdown files on your own device). UpNote is simpler and cheap for life.

Projects and teams

You plan projects, docs or a team wiki

Notion is a workspace of pages and databases, and imports straight from your Evernote account. OneNote is free and fits if you already use Microsoft 365, but you will have to move notes by hand.

Already on your phone

You want something free that is already there

Apple Notes on iPhone, iPad and Mac can import Evernote files on a Mac. Google Keep suits short notes and lists across Android and the web, but cannot import Evernote.

Privacy first

You want notes nobody else can read

Standard Notes encrypts everything end to end, even on its free plan. Joplin also offers end-to-end encrypted sync, and Obsidian keeps notes on your own device.

Clipper and inbox

You mostly clipped pages and saved things to look at later

If Evernote was where links, screenshots and quick notes went, you may not need a notes app at all. Raindrop.io can turn your Evernote web clips into bookmarks. Trezio keeps links, short notes, screenshots and voice notes together, with an encrypted vault for logins, but starts fresh: it cannot import your Evernote notes.

“Reads an Evernote export” means the app's own documentation describes importing Evernote notes. Formatting, internal note links and some attachments may not survive in any of them; each vendor's notes are summarised in the cards below.

Note apps that import Evernote

Open source

Joplin

A free, open-source notes and to-do app with notebooks, tags and a web clipper for Chrome and Firefox. Notes are Markdown and stay on your devices; sync them with end-to-end encryption through Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive or Joplin Cloud.

Free
The apps, with no note limit
Paid
Joplin Cloud from €2.99/month, or €2.40/month billed yearly (2 GB)
Evernote file

Local files

Obsidian

Notes are plain Markdown files in a folder on your own device, linked to each other. Free without limits, with a free web clipper for most browsers. The catch: there is no web app, and syncing between devices is paid unless you set it up yourself.

Free
Everything, including commercial use
Sync
$4/month billed yearly, or $5 monthly
Evernote file
The official Importer plugin reads .enex; nested tags and notebook stacks need a little renaming
Simple and cheap

UpNote

A clean notes app with notebooks and a web clipper for Chrome, Safari and Firefox. The free version stops at 50 notes, so most Evernote users will need Premium, which can be bought once for life.

Free
Up to 50 notes
Premium
$1.99/month or $39.99 lifetime
Evernote file
Imports .enex in the Mac, Windows and Linux apps; notes with attachments over 20 MB may fail, and links between notes still point to Evernote
Encrypted

Standard Notes

Every note is encrypted end to end, and the free plan syncs plain-text notes across unlimited devices. Rich text, Markdown and file storage are on the paid plans, which are billed yearly.

Free
Plain-text notes, tags, offline access
Paid
Productivity $90/year, Professional $120/year
Evernote file
Imports .enex; notes over 3 MB fail, and image-heavy web clips may need trimming first

How Raindrop.io compares with Trezio

Links and notes

Trezio

A calm library for what you save: links (with title, description and image filled in), short text notes, screenshots and voice notes, in nested folders with tags, plus AI summaries on request. Logins can sit beside them in a vault encrypted on your device. On the web, Chrome, Edge and Android.

Free
100 items, 5 folders, 1 vault folder
Pro
$3.70/month, or $2.95/month billed yearly
Evernote file
Not supported. It imports bookmark files (HTML, CSV), not .enex

Not a fit if you need long formatted documents, notebooks of notes, handwriting, text search inside images, offline access or a desktop app. Evernote, Joplin or Obsidian do those.

If Trezio fits

Starting fresh in Trezio, without losing your notes

  1. Keep your notebooks safe

Export each notebook to ENEX from the Evernote desktop app. Leave them in Evernote, which still lets you read and export over the limit, or import them into Joplin or Obsidian. Trezio cannot read them.

  2. Save new things to Trezio

Add the Chrome or Edge extension or the Android app, and send links, quick notes, screenshots and voice notes there instead of clipping them into Evernote.

  3. Mind the free limit

The free plan holds 100 items and 5 folders, which is plenty to see whether it suits you. Pro removes the limits.

Have browser bookmarks too? Trezio can import those: see Import from another bookmark manager.

FAQ

Questions about leaving Evernote

What is the best free Evernote alternative?

It depends on what you kept in Evernote. For long notes in notebooks, Joplin and Obsidian are free with no note limit, and both import an Evernote export. If you live on Apple devices, Apple Notes is free and can import Evernote files on a Mac. OneNote is free too, but Microsoft retired its Evernote importer in 2022.

Does Notion import from Evernote?

Yes. Notion connects to your Evernote account directly, under Settings, Import, Evernote, rather than reading an .enex file. Notion says the importer is reliable up to about 5,000 notes, does not support Evernote Teams, and that images and dates may need cleaning up afterwards.

Why are people leaving Evernote?

Mostly plan limits and price. According to Evernote's own pricing page, the Free plan allows 50 notes, 1 notebook and 1 device. Starter, at $14.99 a month or $99 a year, allows 1,000 notes and 20 notebooks, and unlimited notes need Advanced, at $24.99 a month or $249.99 a year.

How do I export my notes from Evernote?

Use the Evernote desktop app for Mac or Windows, because Evernote Web cannot export. Select a notebook or up to 100 notes, right-click, choose Export and pick ENEX. Exporting works on the Free plan. Export each notebook as its own file so its name survives the move.

Which Evernote alternatives import .enex files?

Joplin, Obsidian (with its official Importer plugin), UpNote's desktop apps, Standard Notes and Apple Notes on a Mac all read .enex files. Notion imports by connecting to your Evernote account instead. Raindrop.io reads .enex files but keeps only web clips, as bookmarks. OneNote's importer was retired in 2022.

Can Trezio import my Evernote notes?

No. Trezio imports bookmark files (HTML and CSV) and its own backups, not Evernote's .enex or HTML exports. If your notes matter, move them to an app that imports them, such as Joplin or Obsidian, and use Trezio for the links, quick notes, screenshots and voice notes you save from now on.

What happens if I stay on Evernote Free with more than 50 notes?

Evernote says you can still view, edit, share and export your existing notes, but you cannot create new notes or notebooks until your account is back within the limit. Notes in the trash count toward it.
