Your table

The first row is the header. Use the buttons above a column to set its alignment.

Enter moves down a row, Shift+Enter adds a line break in a cell, and pasting copied cells into a cell fills the grid from there.

Cells copied from Excel or Google Sheets, CSV text, or a Markdown table. It replaces the table above.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type or paste is uploaded.

How it works

How to make a Markdown table

  1. Fill in or paste

Type into the grid, or copy cells from a spreadsheet and paste them. CSV text and an existing Markdown table work too.

  2. Shape it

Add or remove rows and columns, swap them with Transpose, and choose left, center or right alignment for each column.

  3. Copy the Markdown

The table is written as you type, with the pipes lined up. Copy it, or download it as a .md file.

Cheat sheet

Markdown table syntax

Everything a pipe table can do fits on one screen. These are the rules this generator follows.

Header row

The first line names the columns. Cells are separated by pipes; the outer pipes are optional.

| Name | Price |

Separator row

The second line has at least three dashes per column. It is what turns the lines into a table.

| --- | --- |

Alignment

Colons in the separator row align a column: left, center or right. No colon leaves it to the app.

| :--- | :---: | ---: |

Pipes in a cell

A pipe inside a cell is written with a backslash, so it isn't read as the edge of the cell.

| a \| b |

Line breaks

Each row has to stay on one line. A line break inside a cell is written as <br>.

| line one<br>line two |

Formatting in cells

Bold, italics, code and links work inside cells. Headings, lists, code blocks and merged cells don't.

| **bold** | `code` | [link](…) |

FAQ

Questions about Markdown tables

How do you make a table in Markdown?

Write the header row with the cells separated by pipes, like | Name | Price |. Under it, add a separator row with at least three dashes for each column, like | --- | --- |. Then write one line for each row in the same way. The pipes at the start and end of a line are optional, and the columns don't need to line up for the table to work; lining them up only makes the Markdown easier to read.

How do I align columns in a Markdown table?

Add colons to the separator row. :--- aligns a column to the left, ---: aligns it to the right and :---: centers it. A plain --- leaves it to the app showing the table, which usually means left. In this generator, use the alignment buttons above each column.

How do I put a pipe or a line break inside a cell?

Write a pipe as \| so it isn't read as the edge of a cell; this tool does that for you. A row has to stay on one line, so a line break inside a cell is written as <br>, which GitHub and most Markdown apps show as a new line. Press Shift+Enter in a cell here to add one.

How do I convert Excel, Google Sheets or CSV to a Markdown table?

Select the cells in Excel or Google Sheets, copy them, and paste them into the Paste data box or straight into a cell of the grid. CSV text works the same way, including quoted values that contain commas, and so does an existing Markdown table you want to edit. The first row becomes the header row.

Can a Markdown table have merged cells?

No. Markdown pipe tables, the kind GitHub uses, have no way to merge cells across rows or columns, and every row has the same number of cells; a short row simply gets empty cells. If you need merged cells, split the table in two, or write it as an HTML table, which GitHub accepts inside Markdown.

Where do Markdown tables work?

Pipe tables come from GitHub Flavored Markdown. They work on GitHub and GitLab, in Obsidian, in the VS Code Markdown preview and in most Markdown editors, and Notion turns a pasted Markdown table into a table. The original Markdown had no tables, so a very old or strict converter may show the pipes as plain text.

Is my table uploaded anywhere?

No. The table is built in your browser, and nothing you type or paste is sent to Trezio or anyone else. Your table and options are kept in this browser's local storage so a refresh doesn't wipe them; press Clear to remove the table.

How is this different from Trezio?

This tool makes a table and forgets it. Trezio is where your links and notes live afterwards: save a page in one second from the browser extension, keep text notes and screenshots next to it, organize everything with folders and tags, and find it again with search. There's a free plan.
