How it works

How to view and edit Markdown online

  1. Open or write

Type, paste, or open a .md file, or drag it straight onto the editor. The toolbar adds bold, headings, links, lists and code if you don't know the syntax by heart.

  2. Read it as you go

The preview updates as you type. Work side by side, give the editor the full width, or switch to the preview with its table of contents. On a phone, flip between the Write and Preview tabs.

  3. Keep it

Download the Markdown as a .md file, save a styled HTML page, or copy the HTML. Your draft stays in this browser until you clear it.

What it renders

A reading view for any Markdown file

GitHub Flavored Markdown, the dialect of READMEs, Obsidian vaults and most note apps, rendered the way it reads on screen.

Text and structure

Headings, **bold**, *italic*, ~~strikethrough~~, quotes, rules and nested lists, plus links and images, including bare web addresses.

Table of contents

Built from your headings and nested by level. One click jumps to a section, and the section you are reading is highlighted as you scroll.

Tables

Pipe tables with left, center and right alignment; wide ones scroll sideways. Starting from scratch? Use the Markdown table generator.

Task lists

- [ ] and - [x] show as checkboxes, empty or ticked, so a checklist reads like one.

Code

Inline `code` and fenced blocks keep their spacing in a monospace font. The language you name stays on the block in the HTML.

Private by design

No upload, no server and no account. Raw HTML in a file is shown as text, so a document you open can't run anything.

FAQ

Questions about the Markdown viewer

How do I view a Markdown file?

Press Open .md file and pick it, or drag the file onto the editor. It renders straight away, with a table of contents built from its headings. A README.md from GitHub, notes exported from Obsidian or Notion, and any .md, .markdown or .txt file all work.

Is my Markdown uploaded or saved anywhere?

Nothing is uploaded: the editor and the preview run in your browser, so your text is never sent to Trezio or anyone else. Your draft is saved automatically in this browser's local storage, so a refresh or a closed tab doesn't lose it. Press Clear to remove it. Images your Markdown links to load from their own websites, like in any Markdown viewer.

Does it support GitHub Flavored Markdown?

Yes. Tables with column alignment, task lists, strikethrough and bare web addresses work, along with headings, bold and italic text, quotes, nested lists, fenced code blocks, images and horizontal rules. Raw HTML is shown as plain text, so nothing in a file you open can run code in your browser.

How does the table of contents work?

Every heading in your document becomes an entry, indented by level, and clicking one jumps to that heading in the preview. If two headings share a name, each still gets its own link. The downloaded HTML keeps the heading ids, so links like #getting-started work there too.

How are words and reading time counted?

Words count the text a reader sees in the preview, so Markdown symbols and link addresses are left out. Characters count everything in the editor, spaces included. Reading time assumes 200 words a minute, rounded to the nearest minute.

Do I need to know Markdown to use the editor?

No. The toolbar adds bold, italic, headings, links, lists, task lists, quotes and code for you, and the preview shows the result straight away. Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+K (Cmd on a Mac) add bold, italic and a link. Undo works as usual.

Can I turn my Markdown into HTML or a PDF?

Yes. Download HTML saves a standalone web page with its styles included, and Copy HTML copies just the markup for a blog, a CMS or an email. For a PDF, open the document in the Trezio Markdown to PDF tool, which lays it out for paper with page size, margins and page numbers.

How is this different from Trezio?

This tool is for writing and reading one Markdown document. Trezio is where your notes and links live afterwards: save notes, links, screenshots and voice notes to one library, organize them with folders and tags, and search across everything. There's a free plan.
